Largest size dowel?

Postby janettx@earthlink.net » Sat Dec 07, 2013 11:02 am

What is the largest size dowel that can be used in the DJ-1 Jig and can I drill a hole down the center the entire length of the dowel? (of course I understand there are limitations with my drill press)

Hi Janet,

Because of the way the jaws are grooved out, you could put a fairly large dowel/cylinder(several inches, easily) in the jaws and drill down the center as far as your bit allows you to. If you want to insert a dowel into a bushing for the utmost accuracy, you'll be limited by the size of your bushing; the DJ-1 and 2 hold 3/4" bushings, the biggest I have is 5/8", which doesn't leave much metal. So probably 5/8" would be the max dowel you could put in a bushing and then drill.

Also keep in mind that the accuracy of the tool would allow you to drill from both sides of your stock and meet in the middle.

I hope this answers your question, if not, please let me know,
