Quick Overview

This exquisitely crafted professional saw is designed and produced in Japan for Bridge City customers. The consistent golden color of the high grade Japanese steel is your assurance that the blade has been correctly tempered.

Without question, this is the finest cutting dozuki saw available today. It utilizes a patented tooth grind that makes cutting wood feel almost like cutting butter. It is our favorite recommendation for dovetails and tenons and all other hand cut joints. The blade is .20mm thick and features a 32 TPI tooth count.

Product Description

With a maximum cutting depth of 1-1/2", a blade length of approximately eight inches and an overall length of 21", our 32 teeth per inch Dozuki is an extremely fine tooth back saw used primarily for cutting joints. The blade is an astonishing 0.20mm thick which is only eight thousandths of an inch! Once cut, the wood feels and appears like it was hand planed. We guarantee you have not used a saw that works or cuts as well as this professional Dozuki back saw.

All of the Japanese saws made in Japan for Bridge City feature blades with a golden hue. This color appears during the heat treating process and is normally ground off to reveal the traditional silver color of steel. We insist that it not be ground off so you know the blades are properly tempered.

We highly recommend having a replacement blade on hand as most of these saws feature teeth that have up to four facets ground on each tooth making them all but impossible to sharpen by hand.

Japanese Saws cut on the pull stroke, and because the blades are under tension during cutting, the blade thickness can be much thinner than European heritage saws. A thinner blade means less material is removed and requires much less effort to use. With a little practice, your cuts will look like they were made with a laser.

In soft woods, Japanese Saws cut so efficiently, it is hard to believe it is made by hand. In hard woods, as in all hand sawing operations, let the saw progress at its pace and apply very little downward pressure. Cuts are started at the back of your stock as you pull forward.  Aggressive and impatient users will invariably break teeth on these saws which defeats the purpose of owning a precision saw.

  1. Really fine cut! Review by Carson

I bought this tool used. It came with many other quality tools, but has stood out as exceptional. The kerf is narrower than a pencil mark, and it cuts fast and clean. The handle is nice and easy to hold. The saw works amazingly and has become a vital part of my workflow.

It is not a throwaway tool and must be treated with respect. A narrow, hard blade is easier to bend and chip than a traditional backsaw, but the learning curve is quick, easy, and definitely worth the effort. I have ordered 2 replacement blades to keep this tool ready to work. (Posted on 8/28/14)

  2. I didn't think a hand saw could produce such a clean cut ... Review by Peter T.

I didn't think a hand saw could produce such a clean cut.

Leaving aside the whole issue of cutting perfectly square to the edge and perpendicular to the face of the board; If I use care in executing my saw strokes well, I can pretty much count on not needing to even touch the end of the board with a plane to remove tooth marks as they don't exist. No hand saw that I have ever used can touch it.

IMO- the only question is whether or not you want to purchase & use the Western-style push-cut saw or the Japanese pull-style, but you just can't compare their respective out-of-the-box quality of cut … in particular at this price point! (Posted on 12/23/11)
