Product Description

Tool making as an art has never been more obvious than the form and function of the HP-9 Dual Angle Block Plane.  This beautifully crafted, dual-angle block plane has several distinguishing features making it one of the most interesting products in our thirty-two year history.

We have pioneered a new way to build a block plane which allows for an iron with dual edges; one ground primarily for end grain (42 degree attack angle) and the other for general purpose use (47 degree attack angle). We believe the HP-9 Dual Angle Block Plane is the most versatile block plane available today—one plane body with one iron equals two planes.

The quick action blade clamp we pioneered with the introduction of the HP-7 Shoulder Plane makes for an unusually practical plane design ergonomically.  By eliminating the traditional cross pin found in most antique and contemporary metal bodied planes, we were able to design the body to fit hands of all sizes. The solid stainless investment cast rear tote fits palms perfectly.

The solid stainless steel sole with adjustable throat will serve multiple generations easily. The precision machined aluminum sides and blade clamping mechanism help lower the center of gravity of the plane – it is simply one of the most comfortable and fun to use planes ever made.

In use, the iron is adjusted with a modified Norris mechanism allowing for extremely fine blade advancement—one full revolution of the lead screw changes depth of cut by .03mm/.0013”.  Skewing the blade is accomplished by leveraging the sleek lead screw “knob” either left or right but in practice, it is our preference to make lateral blade adjustments through the sides of the body.

The optional HP-9 Depth Skids will allow you to turn the HP-9 into a mini thickness planer. You will be able to dimension your stock with .002” or greater repeatability. Some of the more obvious uses for this functionality are shoji screen components, jewelry boxes, inlay strips, and other projects where precise thin material is required. The HP-9 Dual Angle Block Plane is the only block plane available today with this capability.

Sole Length = 6.375”/162mm
Sole Width = 1.97”/50mm
A2 Iron Width = 1.375”/35mm
Overall Height = 2.42”/61.5mm

  1. Sick. Very sick. (Youth parlance) Review by Nickname?
    Overall

Is this the most beautiful tool I've ever seen? No. I picked it up in Portland last week in the BCT showroom, where I had the great pleasure to actually see and hold the CT-17 block plane AND the SE block plane, as well as all of the other tools on display. They politely asked me to leave. I guess I was kind of drooling on stuff.

The SE block plane is slightly more beautiful, or this HP-9 would be a clear winner. (I would suggest that the CT-17 is aesthetically equal to the HP-9).

The tool is magnificent. When you hold it, you seem to move into a different realm, where all preconceived notions about life become irrelevant, and you may wonder, "Why are we here, and what's really important?"

I have not yet tried it on wood, but I will, because I bought two of them! Doesn't really matter, though. This plane could chatter across the edge of a board like a cheese grater and I could care less. It's a masterpiece!

I've been taking it (one of them) with me everywhere I go. My wife said, "How cute. You're sleeping next to your little plane."

My only question is Why isn't this selling for a thousand dollars? I feel like I got two for the price of one!

Are there any left? (Posted on 2/2/16)
