The CT-9 Crowning Plane is built very similar to the CT-7 and CT-8. The sole however is concave, and is a true arc segment of a two inch circle. This beautifully crafted tool features an adjustable throat, your choice of rosewood or ebony infills on the toe and heel, a solid brass fence with a matching wood rail and a precision blade adjustment mechanism.
Milled from solid steel, the double dovetailed sole of the CT-9 features an adjustable throat and is ground true for decades of use.
The solid brass sides of the CT-9 Crowning Plane are joined to the sole with an interlocking double dovetail joint. This joint is difficult and time consuming and equally difficult to figure out.
The iron of the CT-9 Crowning Plane is adjusted by a stainless steel, 40 threads per inch lead screw (identical to a micrometer) mechanism. One full revolution moves the blade forward .025", however because of the 20 degree blade pitch, actual edge advancement is .009" per revolution. With one-quarter turn of the adjustment knob, you advance the cutting edge 0.00225" which is less than the thickness of a human hair!
Cutting perfectly centered crowns is quite easy with a properly adjusted fence. This dramatic visual element of the tool performs flawlessly. Cast from silicon brass, the fence is powder-coated and then dressed to reveal the plane profile motif. It is very striking and worthy of a collector quality plane. The removable fence travels on two steel rods and is locked in place with our trademark brass knobs that are infilled with either rosewood or ebony.
